Vocalist Training – How to Sing From Your Diaphragm
Breath control, or singing with support, is the mother skill of healthy singing. In everyday speech, we naturally supply sufficient air for our voice; however singing requires a more conscious regulation of airflow to avoid https://vocalizr.com straining the vocal cords.
After singing, the vocal cords should not ache. If you suffer with a sore or aching throat after singing, your vocal folds are telling you that they are not happy. This can be related to lack of adequate breath control.
Some singers find that breathing from the diaphragm can feel strange and alien, however when you are at rest, this is the most natural way for your body to breathe. The tummy area comes out as it relaxes, and goes in as you exhale. As many of us associate breathing in with sucking your tummy in and making yourself smaller – to get an extra person in the lift or get a tight coat on – it can feel awkward when trying to breathe from the diaphragm consciously.
Try this exercise to access how to breathe from your diaphragm. If you feel dizzy at any point, please stop and take a few normal breaths until you feel normal again before continuing. How To Sing From Your Diaphragm:-
The first step.
- Lie on the floor with your knees up and feet flat on the floor.
- Your spine should maintain its natural curve, so don’t squash the small of your back into the floor.
- If you have space in front of a full length mirror, do this alongside it, so you can see your lower abdominal area.
- Get a small book, approximately A5 size, and place it on your lower abdomen, over your naval.
- Relax and take several slow deep natural breaths. Take your time.
- When you feel serene, turn to look in the mirror. You should see the book rise up when you inhale, and lower when you exhale.
When you can feel this motion, take more control by counting how long you are inhaling for. As you exhale, match the number. See the exercise below.
How To Sing From Your Diaphragm:-
- Remain in the position above.
- Breathe in naturally and deeply, and count as you do so. For example, you might get to 6 before you are comfortably full. You should see the book rise up as you do so.
- Wait until you feel you want to exhale.
- Breathe out and control the exhale for 6 counts, so that you are completely empty by number 6. You should notice that the book comes down as you exhale
Once you feel comfortable with this, you can try standing up. You may find that it takes some time to readjust to the new position, now you are using other muscles to stand. Try the exercise below.
